It's the birthday of Irène Joliot-Curie, who was born in 1897 in Paris. Curie's parents were Marie Skłodowska-Curie and Pierre Curie. Like them, she became a scientist. In 1934 she and her husband Frédéric Joliot-Curie discovered that they could induce stable light elements to become radioactive by bombarding them with alpha-particles. The following year, they were awarded the Nobel chemistry prize for their discovery.
