On this day in 1956, IBM unveiled its 305 RAMAC computer. Like other pre-transistor computers, the IBM 305 RAMAC was bulky. What made it innovative was its use of the first magnetic disk drive, called the Random Access Method of Accounting and Control. The 50, 24-inch disks that made up the RAMAC system could store a total of 5 megabytes' worth of alphanumeric characters
